4 Ways Cambodians Can Make More Money

1. Decide if you would like to work for an existing business, company, or organization or if you are an entrepreneur and would like to own your own business first. Evaluate the job requirements or market demand and long term trend, and adopt a continual growth mindset. Knowing English or another foreign language can be extremely useful and give you an advantage at many jobs, and it may impress the boss even if you’re not constantly speaking English at your job. Enroll in some English classes provided free by an NGO, or visit EnglishtoAsianlanguages.com for a free basic English course that will put you far ahead of many people starting out learning English.

2. For Businesses, Claim Your Free Website at Google and Create a Free Google Places Listing. This will mean that your business shows up easily on the map on people’s phones, including foreigners and tourists. Make sure to have English and Khmer Language on This Business Website and Listing. Provide some basic information about your business like hours of operation, type of service and products, and upload a good picture of your business location or company logo.

3. If you don’t have a business, you can still make a website and think of something that you can offer the community that is something in need. Add your phone number and see if anyone tries to contact you to order something. Many existing restaurants and food delivery services have websites already to help them get more business and provide their phone number to people online to order.

4. Evaluate your current work and financial situation. Is there something slightly different you could be doing to be one step ahead of the competition? Are you going above and beyond for your customers or your employers? Are you studying and learning about your trade, craft, job, and trying to become the expert? Always continue to learn. Spend 1 hour a day 2 or 3 times a week researching “how to…” in areas of your job or career on Google, and read all the content that shows up in the search results.

Dropping Off Supplies at the Local School

Here’s a pic of some supplies I purchased today for a local small ages 5 – 10 school just on the edge of town. One of the instructors at the school has been helping me create the charts of common words we use on this website and give out to the public for free.

Getting to see the kids excited and watch them go crazy over the surprises that come out of the bag when I visit the school are always a highlight of my week. Last week I brought some little decorative hair clips for the girls and they made sure that I handed them out promptly. They took the distribution process of that item very seriously and supervised me with much concern.

The week before that I was able to buy a bunch of orange juice for the kids and some Cokes for the adults as we worked on the charts, and the kids waiting after school got to enjoy a beverage. It was great to get to tell them about the orange juice “Mien Vitamin C jaran, samrab sukhapeap la oh” which means “It has a lot of Vitamin C, for good health”.

I always like to try to embed subliminal messages about wholesome good things and activities that will benefit the kids like Vitamin C and studying hard, but by making it fun and pressure-free. I like to ask them if they are studying a lot, but in a purposefully leading and positive, happy way, which I believe is a great psychological trick to get the children to believe that trying hard in school is a good and desirable thing, without making the concept boring or burdensome.

This is my way of reinforcing and rewarding scholastic achievement while I have their attention and we are all having fun together.
